NIGHTFLY RECORDS BROADCAST #18 - ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2022

Posted on December 21 2022

Here are the top ten new albums that moved and grooved us here at Nightfly Records in 2022.

Nightfly Records – Albums Of The Year - 2022

 10. Plastikman & Chilly Gonzales – Consumed In Key (Turbo Recordings)
Chilly Gonzales adds piano counterpoints to Richie Hawtin’s dub techno classic from 1998, icy piano floats on top of sub mariner bass, beats and fog dense textures. Don your snorkles.

9. The Delines – The Sea Drift (Decor)
Willy Vlautin’s bitterweet, tragic, cinematic tales of bad luck and bad decisions sung beautifully by Amy Boone with Southern country soulful grooves from The Delines, slow and sublime.

8. Hannah Peel & Paraorchestra – The Unfolding (Real World Records)
Pastoral classical/electronic epic, like a modern-day Vaughan Williams. Ascends into heavenly ecstasy.

7. Erland Cooper – Music For Growing Flowers (Mercury KX)
Music commissioned for a ‘floral transformation’ installation at the Tower of London, Scottish composer Erland Cooper produces 37 minutes of gentle, ambient, meditative modern classical music.

6. Tim Green – Eastbound Silhouette (All Day I Dream)
Tim Green’s seductive house sound, modern deep house beats with ethereal washes and dreamy melody. If Summery house grooves, listened to with eyes closed, body and head swaying is what you’re after look no further.

5. Jeigo – Cerulean (Air Miles)
Electronic producer Jack Carr Miles drives us headlong into cross genre territory, deep into house, breaks and drum ‘n’ bass, emerging triumphant. Urgent and melancholic.

4. O'Flynn x Frazer Ray – Shimmer (Technicolour)
UK house and breaks is safe with these modern producers, melding diverse styles of gorgeous, euphoric break beat driven electronic dance music for the 2020s.

3. Bonny Light Horseman – Rolling Golden Holy (37d03d)
Americana folk supergroup deliver once again. Plaintive heart-breaking harmony and beautiful melodies that swirl and hook themselves into you. Once caught you’ll be forever under their spell.

2. Roger Eno – The Turning Year (Deutsche Grammophon)
Exquisite neo classical album, predominantly piano, strings are used sparingly but are devastatingly effective. This is reflective mood music, achingly beautiful and elegiac.

1. Tstewart - Elysian (Mercury KX)
American electronic producer Travis Stewart pays tribute to Elysian Park in Los Angeles. Piano led electronic and orchestral moods lead us through a joyous journey of melody and atmosphere, at once nostalgic and touching then uplifting and blissful. A marvellous modern pop ambient classic.

I have included a playlist below for your discovery.
